NORTH CANTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
January 18, 2006
The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public Library
held a regular meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at the library. Mr.
Shoup called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with the following members
present: Mr. Dansizen, Mr. Lawton, Mr. Smetana. Absent: Mrs. Schiltz, Mrs.
Zollinger. Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman. Guests: Phil Stahler,
Dolores Albrecht.
Mr. Lawton moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to accept the
minutes of the December 21, 2005 meeting as presented. Ayes: Dansizen,
Lawton, Shoup, Smetana. Absent: Schiltz, Zollinger.
The Clerk-Treasurer’s report for December 2005 was accepted
and filed for audit.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to approve the
following gifts for the Memorial and Gift Fund.
Perry and Ella Lazich gave $25.00 in memory of Betty
Morris
The R. S. Hoover Family Trust gave $5,000.00
The W. H. Hoover Family Trust gave $10,000.00
The Director presented the statistical reports for December
and the Year 2005. With steady monthly growth our annual circulation totaled
1,079,429, which is a 4% increase over 2004. The addition of over 27,000
new items, a 20% increase over 2004, helped contribute to our ever increasing
circulation. The Director updated the Board on the proposed TEL/Tabor
Amendment to the Ohio Constitution. Figures were presented on the financial
impact this proposal would have on our library. If this amendment had been in
effect over the last 10 years, our library would have lost over $1,500,000.00
or an average of $138,000.00 less per year. Community Reads programs are
being planned for our North Canton project. Phillip Beard, the author of Dear
Zoë, will be here March 20, and we hope to have the entire population of North
Canton reading his book before this program. The finale of this project will
be a visit by Neal Zurcher in April during National Library Week, April 2
through 8, 2006. Because of high demand for tickets to this event, only those
patrons attending at least one other North Canton Reads program will be
eligible for a ticket.
Committee assignments for the 2006 business year were
discussed. Mr. Lawton will replace Mrs. Hoover on the Long Range Planning
Committee. All other assignments will remain the same as 2005, pending the
appointment of a new Board Member.
A thank you was read from the Stark County Parks Department
for use of our public meeting room. A letter from a patron who wished to
point out the lack of close parking spaces to the main entrance was read.
The Director presented a proposal to exempt our Golden
Buckeye cardholders from paying overdue fines. This exemption would not
include the need to pay for any items that were lost or damaged.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to accept the
proposal to exempt any holder of a Golden Buckeye card from the need to pay
overdue fines for late returned items only. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Shoup,
Smetana. Absent: Schiltz, Zollinger.
Phil Stahler, Friends of the Library representative,
reported that the groups regular monthly meetings have been changed to the
second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Lawton moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to adjourn to
executive session at 8:40 a.m. to discuss a personnel matter.
