BOARD MEETING MINUTES
May 11, 2005

The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public Library held a regular meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at the library. Mr. Shoup called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with the following members present: Mr. Dansizen, Mrs. Hoover, Mr. Lawton, Mrs. Schiltz, Mrs. Zollinger. Absent: Mr. Smetana. Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman. Guests: Patricia Swallen, Judy Rosenik, James Wilkins, attorney.

The Oath of Office was administered to Roberta Zollinger.

Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to approve the minutes of the March 16, 2005 meeting as presented. Ayes: Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup, Zollinger. Absent: Smetana.

Mrs. Schiltz moved, Mrs. Zollinger seconding, to adjourn to executive session at 8:05 a.m. so that the Board my consult with Mr. Wilkins on maters related to the labor negotiations.

Regular session was reconvened at 8:50 a.m.

Mrs. Hoover left the meeting.

The Clerk-Treasurer’s reports for March and April 2005 were accepted and filed for audit.

Mr. Dansizen moved, to accept the following gifts for the Memorial and Gift Fund:

North Canton Library Technical Services Staff gave $20.00 for the purchase of a book in memory of Jane Albrecht

The Canton College Club gave the gift of $25.00

The North Canton Public Library Sunshine Fund gave $14.72 for the purchase of a book in memory of Glenn E. Smith

Sally and Harry Marchand gave $50.00 for the purchase of books in memory of Elsie Berger

The North Canton Retired Elementary and Middle School Teachers gave $16.95 for the purchase of a book in memory of Doris Crump

Mary Katherine Faircloth gave $25.00 for the purchase of a book in memory of Elsie Berger

Mrs. Zollinger moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to accept from the Friends of the Library the following items for library use: a wireless internet access manager valued at $2748.00, a new Ricoh copier and coin vend for public use valued at $6,664.00, signage for the new shelving units valued at $588.00. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup, Zollinger. Absent: Hoover, Smetana.

The Director presented the statistical reports for March and April 2005. Monthly circulation continues to increase slightly every month, and we are still maintaining a 3% average increase over the 2004 circulation. The wireless Internet access manager that was purchased through the Friends generosity will allow patrons to use their own lap top or hand held computers to access the Internet through our server. This service, which will require a library card to access, will be available on library property during normal operating hours. Thanks to the Friends, several paid advertisements promoting National Library Week and the Friends Book Sale were recently featured on a local radio station. The Director and Building Committee will be working with an advocacy group to deal with issues related to A.D.A. compliance. The staff In-Service day, which was held May 6th, was very well accepted by the staff. Linda Bruno presented a workshop titled “The Art of Communication”, and many of the departments held sessions to review procedures specific to their areas.

It was reported that the Little Art Gallery is currently featuring the 63rd Annual May Show that opened on May 7th and will continue through June 4th.

Mrs. Zollinger moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to submit the 2006 Asking Budget, as presented, to the North Canton Board of Education for approval. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup, Zollinger. Absent: Hoover, Smetana.

Mr. Shoup, Chair of the Personnel Committee, reported that the committee held a meeting on May 10, 2005 to review management salary issues.

It was reported that it is hoped that the Union will be ratifying the Tentative Contract Agreement before the June meeting.

Judy Rosenik thanked the board for the very informative in-service day. All the staff felt it was very worthwhile.

Pat Swallen said that the Children’s Department staff is busy planning for the Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds.

The next regular meeting of the North Canton Public Library Board of Trustees will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at 8:00 a.m.
