NORTH CANTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
March 16, 2005

The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public Library held a regular meeting on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the library. Mr. Shoup called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with the following members present: Mr. Dansizen, Mr. Lawton, Mr. Smetana. Absent: Mrs. Hoover, Mrs. Schiltz, Mrs. Zollinger. Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman. Guests: Phil Stahler, Diane Applegate.

Mr. Lawton moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to approve the minutes of the January 19, 2005 meeting as corrected. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Shoup, Smetana. Absent: Hoover, Schiltz, Zollinger.

The Clerk-Treasurer’s reports for January and February 2005 were accepted and filed for audit.

Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to accept the gift of $27,672.50 from the Library Association Trust for the Permanent Improvement Fund. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Shoup, Smetana. Absent: Hoover, Schiltz, Zollinger.

Mr. Lawton moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to accept the following gifts for the Memorial and Gift Fund:

The North Canton Book Club gave $20.00 for the purchase of a book in memory of Charlotte Green

The North Canton Book Club gave $15.00 for the purchase of a book in memory of Harvey O. Morris

The North Canton Teachers gave $10.00 for the purchase of a book in memory of Leah Ann Kerr

Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to approve use of a facsimile signature for checks issued by the library. Discussion of security measures followed. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Shoup, Smetana. Absent: Hoover, Schiltz, Zollinger.

The Director presented the statistical reports for January and February 2005. Circulation continues to increase at a steady rate with January showing a 5% increase and a 3% increase for February. Sunday, February 27, 2005 set a record of 2,301 items circulated on a Sunday.

Mr. Lawton moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to accept the Director’s recommendation to close the library on Friday, May 6, 2005 for a staff in-service training day. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Shoup, Smetana. Absent: Hoover, Schiltz, Zollinger.

The Director reported that the installation of the two new boilers is completed but some temperature adjustments are still needed. The fire inspection went pretty well. A few minor violations have been reported, which include the need to close some openings in the ceilings, and the opening between the boiler room and the outside storage shed.

The Director reported for the Art Committee that the Art From the Classroom exhibit is still on display, with the Middle School work being featured next. This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Little Art Gallery, and some special events are being planned for October. We have received permission from City Hall to hang banners on the Main Street light poles.

Mr. Dansizen, Strategic Planning Chair, reported that the committee held a meeting to review the Long Range Plan.

It was reported that negotiations with the library staff labor union are still continuing.

Mr. Stahler reported that the Friends of the Library now have a member selling book sale books on E-Bay. These books are receiving a much greater profit than they would at the sales. Friend’s members now have the added perk of periodic members only sales, which are held in the storage area. Book sale volunteers escort members into the area.

The next regular meeting of the North Canton Public Library Board of Trustees is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, 2005.
