The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public
Library held a regular meeting on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at the library.
Mr. Lawton, Vice-President, called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with
the following members present: Mr. Dansizen, Mrs. Schiltz, Mr. Smetana.
Absent: Mr. Shoup, Mrs. Zollinger. Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman.
Guests: Phil Stahler, Carolyn McBee and Kathy Schen.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to approve
the minutes of the March 18, 2006 meeting as presented. Ayes: Dansizen,
Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent: Shoup, Zollinger.
The Clerk-Treasurer’s report for March 2006 was
accepted and filed for audit.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to accept
the following gifts for the Memorial and Gift Fund;
College Club Book Review Group III gave a $25.00
gift in appreciation of a program presented to them
The Sunshine Fund of the North Canton Public Library gave $25.00 for the
purchase of a book in memory of Dorris Lang
The Friends of the Library gave $50.00 for the purchase of books in
memory of Patricia Barclay

Mrs. Schiltz moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to accept
the gift of $29,321.16 from the North Canton Library Association for the
Permanent Improvement Fund. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana.

The Director presented the statistical and usage
reports for March 2006. With the circulation of over 100,000 items in a
single month, March broke all previous records. This 8% increase over last
March brought our year-to-date total to just over 6%. Linda Hackworth, Head
of Patron Services resigned her position earlier this month.
Mr. Smetana moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to accept
the resignation of Linda Hackworth, Head of Patron Services, effective April
8, 2006. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent: Shoup, Zollinger.
The Director reported that she has appointed Sandra
Lang, Head of Adult and Teen Services as interim head of Patron Services.
The Sun digitization project is still looking for project funding. The
Heritage Society staff is preparing some grant requests and the Chamber of
Commerce has sent a mailing to their membership, requesting financial
support for the project. The Polaris incoming account and renewal line was
activated for the public on April 3. A staff member was injured recently
when she tripped over a child who was crawling on the floor. Workers
Compensation has been filed and she has chosen to receive reduced pay from
this agency, rather than using her available sick leave. It is hoped that
she will be able to return to light duty soon.
It was reported that the 64th Annual May Show will be
opening in the gallery on May 6, 2006. The revised Art Class student fees
and teacher stipend proposal was reviewed.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to accept
the revised art student fee structure and teacher stipend amounts. Ayes:
Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent: Shoup, Zollinger.
Mr. Dansizen, Strategic Planning Committee Chair,
reported that the committee has been meeting to look at a long-range plan
for utilization of the facility and programs.
A letter of resignation from the Board has been
received from Carol Schiltz.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to accept
the resignation of Carol Schiltz from the Board of Trustees, effective with
the approval of her successor by the North Canton Board of Education. Ayes:
Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent: Shoup, Zollinger.
Kathy Schen of the Adult and Teen Services Department
stated that they were all relieved to see the completion of another tax
season. Carolyn McBee from the Children’s Department reported that they are
getting ready for the upcoming Summer Reading Program.
Phil Stahler, Friends of the Library representative,
reported that a Book Sale will be opening at the end of the week.
Mrs. Schiltz moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to adjourn
to executive session at 8:40 a.m. to discuss some personnel matters.

Regular session was reconvened at 9:50 a.m.
Mr. Smetana moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to accept
the Director’s recommendation to allow Susan Vancavage, Head of Collection
Development, due to the serious illness of her husband, to work some of her
weekly hours from her home, pending a periodic review. Ayes: Dansizen,
Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent: Shoup, Zollinger.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to submit
the name of Florence Rankin to the Board of Education, for appointment on
the Board of Library Trustees to fill the unexpired term of Carol Schiltz,
which will continue through December 31, 2009.
The next regular meeting of the North Canton Public
Library Board of Trustees has been changed to Wednesday, May 10, 2005 at
8:00 a.m.
Mrs. Schiltz moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to adjourn
the meeting at 9:55 a.m. Ayes: Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Smetana. Absent:
