The Director presented the statistical reports for September 2004, which
showed that borrowing for the month has leveled out with that of a year ago.
Year-to-date figures continue to hold at about a 5% increase. Negotiations
for the next labor agreement will begin on November 10, 2004. It was
suggested that the December board meeting be changed to December 8th, so
that the new contract could be ready for board action. It was agreed to keep
the meeting at December 15th due to prior engagements by several board
members.
The Director recommended that the library close on Sunday, December 26th
2004 and Sunday January 2nd 2005.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Smetana seconding, to accept the Director’s
recommendation to close the library on Sunday, December 26th 2004 and
Sunday, January 2nd 2005. Ayes: Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Smetana, Zollinger.
Absent: Schiltz, Shoup.
It was reported that several sections of sidewalk near the front entrance
have been leveled to allow easier handicap access. Snow plowing services
will be contacted to investigate the possibility of adding ice melt
spreading to the contract. The Sun digitization project is still in the
planning process. The North Canton Heritage Society is preparing a grant
request for funding. A collection maintenance report was shared that shows
that over $32,000.00 in materials has been reported as missing since January
2004. The largest loss is in the DVD collection. It is hoped that the
addition of the security gates and the RFID security tags will help with
this problem. The patron self check stations are now operational.
Mr. Dansizen, Building Committee Chair, reported that a problem with leaking
around the north wall windows is being studied. ITS Construction has noted
some loose mortar around this area, as well as some loose flashing on the
roof.
Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to hire ITS Construction to repair
loose mortar and flashing along the north side of the building, at a cost
not to exceed $20,000.00. Ayes: Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Smetana, Zollinger.
Absent: Schiltz, Shoup.
Work on planning for relocating the book drops is continuing. Pricing is
being obtained for electrical work, concrete pads and a lift to allow
materials to be raised from street level to the first floor. Pricing has
been received for a stained glass panel to be used at one side of the new
security gate. The cost was more than expected, so other options are being
investigated.
Mrs. Hoover, Art Committee Chair, reported that A Different Angle will be
opening on November 7, 2004. The featured artist, Denette Teis Edwards will
display her black and white photography. A selection of bead jewelry by
Paula Mastroianni will be displayed in the cases. This show will be open
through December 5, 2004. It has been recommended by the Curator that the
fees for the art classes be increased by $2.00 per class. This change will
allow for the possibility of less students being able to fill a class quota.
It was agreed that this increase would be acceptable.
Mrs. Zollinger, Logo Committee Chair, reported that the committee has
narrowed down its selections.
Kathy Babic and Jamie Macris reported that the staff is getting used to the
new security procedures.
Phil Stahler reported that there is some concern that there may not be
enough materials available to have a January book sale. A decision will be
made soon. The Friends currently have excess money in their account, so the
staff has been asked to present some purchase suggestions to the Director.
The Director reported that she attending a recent workshop on Friends
Organizations and fund raising. She will be reporting on what she learned at
the next Friends meeting.
