BOARD  MEETING  MINUTES

March 17, 2004 

 

The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public Library held a regular meeting on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at the library.  Mr. Shoup called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with the following members present:  Mr. Dansizen, Mrs. Hoover, Mr. Lawton, Mrs. Schiltz.  Absent: Mr. Smetana, Mrs. Zollinger.  Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman.  Guests:  Linda Bayman, Dolores Albrecht, Susan Vancavage. 

Mr. Lawton moved, Mrs. Hoover seconding, to accept the minutes of the January 21, 2004 meeting as presented.  Ayes:  Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Smetana, Zollinger.   

The Clerk-Treasurer’s reports for January and February 2004 were accepted and filed for audit. 

Mrs. Schiltz moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to accept the General Fund gift of $20.00 from The Waterford for the purchase of a talking book.  Ayes:  Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Smetana, Zollinger.   

Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding to accept the Permanent Improvement Fund gift of $28,634.73 from the North Canton Library Associations.  Ayes:  Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Smetana, Zollinger.   

Mrs. Hoover moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to accept the following gifts for the Memorial and Gift Fund: 

David Serra gave the book Nelles Guide; Sweden by Gerhard Lemmer, in memory of Dagmar Obergwargo 

The Friends of the Library made the following gift purchases:  100 metal folding chairs with a hanging storage cart, two magazine display racks for the young adult area, two manual push sweepers and a selection of book marks for public distribution 

Ayes:  Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Smetana, Zollinger.   

The Director presented the statistical reports for January and February 2004.  A 7% increase over January 2003 and a 10% increase over February 2003 have lead to an 8% Year-To-Date increase.  Service and Program statistics show continued increases in use of the library.  The Board was updated on some pending state legislation.  It was reported that the Fire Marshal completed his inspection and several minor repairs were needed.   

A LOGO Committee is being formed to design a new Library Logo that would be more recognizable to the community.  It is hoped that a member of the board will volunteer to be on the committee. 

The recent problem with increased theft of library materials was discussed.  Several new security measures have been added, including the hiring of a security service to provide a guard during after school and weekend hours, no bags in the audiovisual area, and alarms being installed on all emergency exit only doors.  The Building Committee will be working on a plan for a security system, with the Director. 

Mr. Dansizen, Building Committee Chair, showed the North Canton Chamber of Commerce plaque, which was presented to the library as the most improved facility with a staff of over 20.   

Mrs. Hoover, Art Committee Chair, stated that the Art From the Classrooms of the North Canton City Schools has been a very good series this year.  This show will continue through April 18, 2004. 

Dolores Albrecht, staff member, stated that the staff is appalled at the amount of theft that has been taking place in the library recently.  She reported that the staff is anxious to help with the problem any way they can. 

Linda Bayman, staff member, reported that the Friends of the Library Spring Dinner is coming soon, and an August summer book sale has been scheduled. 

Mrs. Hoover moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to adjourn to executive session at 9:00 a.m. to discuss a personnel matter.

Regular session reconvened at 9:44 a.m. 

Mr. Lawton moved, Mrs. Schiltz seconding, to place Maria Meymarian on extended leave for medical reasons, at her current rate of pay, as an inactive Department Head, until such a time as her paid leave time is exhausted.  Ayes:  Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Hoover, Smetana, Zollinger.   

Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton seconding, to hire Kastner, Westman and Wilkins Attorneys at Law, for collective bargaining negotiations.  Ayes:  Dansizen, Lawton, Schiltz, Shoup.  Absent:  Hoover, Smetana, Zollinger. 

The next regular meeting of the North Canton Public Library Board of Trustees will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 8:00 a.m.
