CANTON PUBLIC LIBRARY The Board of Trustees of the North Canton Public Library held a regular meeting on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the library. Mr. Shoup called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. with the following members present: Mr. Dansizen, Mrs. Hoover, Mr. Lawton, Mr. Powell, Mrs. Zollinger. Absent: Mrs. Schiltz. Others: Karen Sonderman, Farilyn Buchman. Guests: Phil Stahler, Maria Meymarian, Susan Vancavage. Mr.
Lawton moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to accept the minutes of the September 17,
2003 meeting as corrected. Ayes:
Dansizen, Hoover, Lawton, Powell, Zollinger.
Absent: Schiltz. The
Clerk-Treasurer’s report for September 2003 was accepted and filed for audit. Mr.
Powell moved, Mr. Dansizen seconding, to make the following modifications to the
General Fund and Memorial Gift Fund accounts:

Absent: Schiltz. Mrs. Zollinger moved, Mrs. Hoover
seconding, to accept with gratitude the gifts of
a snow blower, a portable microphone and speaker system, and $2,000 for
annual floor mat service from the Friends of the Library.

Lawton, Powell, Zollinger. Absent: Schiltz. Mr. Dansizen moved, Mr. Lawton
seconding, that the 2004 local levy rate of .50 mills and the estimated amount
of $204,052, as certified by the Stark County Budget Commission and the Stark
County Auditor be accepted for collection.

Lawton, Powell, Zollinger. Absent:
Schiltz. The Director presented the statistical
report for September 2003. Increases
in circulation are now balancing out the loss of the Greentown Branch, with a
17% increase for the month and a 3% year-to-date increase.
The HAPLR Report for 2003, which is based on 2002 statistical figures,
has ranked our library as number two in our population level.
It was reported that Kiko Auctioneers
has been contracted to sell the Greentown Branch Library and any remaining
equipment and furnishings at public auction on October 30, 2003 at 5:30 p.m.
All of the materials have been removed from the building and are awaiting
the Friends of the Library January book sale.
The Polaris automated system will be
upgraded to the next version early in December.
Training on the update will be taking place Thursday, October 16 and
Friday, October 17. Mrs. Hoover, Art Committee Chair,
reported that the next gallery show will open on November 1st and run
through November 30th. The
show will feature works by the local chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of
America. The cases will feature
beaded jewelry by Estelle Goodnight. The
Friends of the Little Art Gallery are currently holding a silent auction of a
Tom Franta original, to help support the gallery. Several thank you notes have been
received from area schools that received donated material from the Greentown
collection. The teachers were very
grateful for the opportunity to add to their classroom materials. Mrs. Hoover moved, Mrs. Zollinger
seconding, to accept, with regret, the resignation of Mr. James Powell, from the
Board of Library Trustees, effective December 31, 2003.

Schiltz. Mrs. Zollinger moved, Mr. Dansizen
seconding, to submit the name of Mr. Harvey Skip Lawton to the North Canton
Board of Education for reappointment to the North Canton Public Library Board of
Trustees for a seven-year term, to begin January 1, 2004.

Lawton, Powell, Zollinger. Absent: Schiltz. A proposed revision to the policy
statement on Hours of Work was distributed and discussed.
The statement will be put on the November agenda for further review. Maria Meymarian, staff representative,
stated that she is glad to have the Reference Department at full staff levels. Phil Stahler, Friends of the Library
representative stated that they have added several new members thanks to the
book sale. Mr. Powell moved, Mr. Dansizen
seconding, to adjourn the meeting to executive session to discuss the disposal
of the Greentown Branch and a personnel issue.
